[ARCHIVED] County reduces millage rate in light of reassessment

Courthouse

Warren County’s property tax millage rate is set for 2026.

The rate - which had been at 25 mills based on the 1989 reassessment - will drop to 3.26 mills based on the results of this year’s reassessment.

“Once we got through the reassessment, (we knew) the reassessment rate would be adjusted to reflect a new rate,” Commissioner Dan Glotz said during Wednesday’s meeting.

That millage rate reflects a revenue-neutral approach in the first year after reassessment which is required by law.

“All of us here at the table pay property taxes as you folks do,” Glotz said. “The last thing we want to do” is raise taxes more than is required.

He encouraged residents to examine the county budget when it’s released in the coming weeks.

“We’ve been very, very judicious in making sure that we balance the budgets and have not had to experience tapping into any funding like our TAN (tax anticipation note) or anything like that,” he added.

“We do all we can to keep costs under control. Reassessment was something that had to be done.”

“My message would be to future boards of commissioners,” Commissioner Ken Klakamp said, “don’t want 36 years because it will happen again if you do.”
